Two Akash Missiles test fired : Two surface to air Akash missiles were test fired in quick succession from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, off the Odisha coast on May 28, 2012 with one of them failing to hit the target and falling into the sea.

India develops missile defense shield: The Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) developed a missile defense shield which can be put in place at short notice to protect at least two cities. The United States, Russia and Israel are the only other nations which have such a missile defense shield. The shield has been tested successfully and an incoming ballistic missile with a range of upto 2000 km can be destroyed. The system is to be upgraded to a range of 5000 km by 2016. The DRDO used variants of Prithvi missiles as simulated targets.

India sets up new navy base in Lakshadweep : India established a full-fledged navy base in the Lakshadweep Islands in the Arabian Sea, in an effort to have a robust security system and infrastructure in place to secure its island territories. The new base was commissioned on April 30, 2012 and has been christened as INS Dweeprakshak. It will have its headquarters at Kavaratti. India already has a fill-fledged naval base in Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal.
